Faculty in the LSU Department of Mathematics are leading research efforts supported by major federal grants, driving innovation in the field.
Nicholson Professor of Mathematics Robert Lipton is a co-investigator on a $7.2 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative grant from the Army Research Office. His project unites researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Chicago, the University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Pennsylvania to address fundamental challenges in material science.
Ana Balibanu was awarded the 2024 André Lichnerowicz Prize in Poisson Geometry, a biennial honor recognizing outstanding contributions to the field.
Beyond research, our faculty are deeply committed to mentoring students at all levels. Assistant Professors Ana Balibanu, Nadia Drenska, Ben Fehrman, Daniel Massatt, and Andrei Tarfulea have all secured National Science Foundation grants, enabling them to advance their research while providing hands-on training for graduate and undergraduate students.
Nadia Drenska was featured on the SIAM News Blog for her Summer 2024 research project with Peter Wolenski and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, applying advanced statistical techniques to analyze body composition metrics. This project, supported by the Patricia Bodin Summer Research Fund, provided students with invaluable experience in applied mathematics.
LSU’s excellence in mathematics is nationally recognized. According to the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey, LSU now ranks 28th in Mathematics and Statistics R&D expenditures, up from 31st; and 18th among state universities.
