Housed at the center of one our country’s great public land-, sea-, and space-grant universities, the LSU Ogden Honors College is based on a culture of excellence, inquiry, and creativity that develops tomorrow’s leaders for our state, nation, and the world.
The intellectual roots of the LSU Ogden Honors College reach back to two great strains in American history, one Lincolnian and one Jeffersonian. The first dates to 1862, when President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act, which incentivized states to create colleges “for the benefit of agriculture and the Mechanical Arts” as well as “scientific and classical studies.” The Morrill Act ushered in a new wave of publicly-supported American universities–like LSU–that responded to the needs of its citizens to make higher education more relevant to the needs of society.
The second strain harkens to the Jeffersonian idea, bound up in our nation’s founding, that opportunity should not be based on birth or wealth, but on an individual’s merit, talent, and work-ethic.
To realize our mission, we seek visionary partners attuned to the evolving needs of society. Your investment in the Ogden Honors College will guide our course as we strive to match the most promising students with the most accomplished faculty, present an ambitious curriculum rich with opportunity, and develop collaborative learning spaces in which to pursue frontline research that spans traditional disciplinary boundaries. Together, we will deliver a generation of courageous leaders fiercely committed to positive transformation in Louisiana and beyond.
