For over 30 years, the University College’s Summer Scholars Program recruited and retained top students from under-represented students to make a successful transition from high school to LSU. Summer Scholar students are admitted incoming LSU freshmen students who meet the ACT/SAT score, GPA requirements, written communication skills, as well as recommendations from mentors and teachers to apply to the program. Students receive a one-time summer only scholarship that covers six hours of course enrollment, on-campus summer housing and a meal plan. Summer Scholar students entered LSU summer school as full-time students while managing the expectations of the Summer Scholars Program. Summer Scholar students attend weekly study sessions, LSU Faculty presentations, community service projects and cultural activities.
The Summer Scholars Class of 1995 alums established the Nona Mack-Haynes Scholarship with the goal of endowing the scholarship. Mrs. Nona Mack-Haynes, affectional known as “Mama Plum” was selected as the first coordinator of Summer Scholars. Mama Plum served in that capacity until her retirement in 2001.
The Nona Mack Haynes Scholarship is open to ALL full-time undergraduate students at LSU who are graduates of the Summer Scholar Program.
“When I hear "Once a scholar, always a scholar," I immediately think of the strong network and support system the Summer Scholars Program has provided me. I find comfort in these words because I am so grateful for the immediate connection I can have with a fellow Summer Scholar, whether they were from my class or another class of Summer Scholars. There is this sense of unity and pride that is incomparable to any other, knowing that there is a large community of Summer Scholars on campus to support you.” - Jonathan Aphaiyarath, Biological Sciences Major, 3.98 cumulative GPA, 2018 Summer Scholar, 2021 Nona Mack-Haynes Scholarship Recipient
